Becoming a Rainbow
A girl can become a Rainbow if she is aged 5 – 7 years.
Welcome Bag
A  welcome bag is given to all new Rainbows when they join.  (At their first or second meeting).  The bag has been specially designed to be fun for Rainbows to use and it is an easy way to make sure a Rainbow has everything together at the end of every meeting.

Ready For Rainbows

New Rainbows also receive a booklet called Ready for Rainbows.  This fun pre-Promise colour-and-draw activity book takes a new Rainbow through her first few weeks before making her Promise. It includes the first part of the new Rainbow Story which introduces the new Rainbow character,

Rainbow Wear
A Rainbow chooses her outfit from a range of Rainbow wear, which can be purchased from the Guide Shop at JHQ (if you live further afield, your Rainbow Guider will place a mail order for you).  The specially designed Rainbow clothes are stylish, practical, economical and fun for today’s girls.

The Rainbow Programme
What do Rainbows do?  Well, they have a whole lot of fun and take part in an exciting programme!  The programme is known as the Rainbow Jigsaw, which has been developed for the 21st –century Rainbow.  The Jigsaw contains four elements:

jigsaw

Rainbows Look

This area allows Rainbows to begin to understand that they are part of a wider world.
Rainbows Look includes activities that explore their environment and communities. Rainbows are encouraged to get out and about to discover the world about them.

Rainbows Learn

Rainbows learn all the time, both in guiding and in their daily lives. A Rainbow learns in many ways, including by doing activities at her meetings. Being a Rainbow should be fun and not at all like school.

Rainbows Laugh

This area of the Rainbow Jigsaw encourages games, songs, parties, celebrations, making a mess and enjoying life.
Rainbows Laugh also has a learning strand, as each Rainbow develops important skills at the same time.

Rainbows Love

This area is at the heart of the Rainbow Jigsaw. A girl is beginning to understand the concept of ‘love’ when she joins Rainbows through her experiences of caring and sharing with family and friends, and being kind to others.

The Rainbow Website

Rainbows have their own, safe website containing lots of fun activities:

The Rainbow Sleepover

Guiding is all about fun and most Rainbows enjoy a ‘sleepover’.  This optional adventure gives Rainbows a chance to get to know each other as well as grow in confidence and gain a sense of independence.

Moving up to Brownies

A colourful activity book is available to the six-and-a-half year-old Rainbow to help her look back over her time as a Rainbow and to prepare for Brownies. It contains the last part of The Rainbow Story where Olivia (the new Rainbow character) moves on to Brownies.
